Mark told us: This 31 lb white Ulua or Trevally was caught off the Kona Coast while paddling in 60 feet of water in my Ocean Kayak Sprinter with a Penn 8500 spinning reel w/ 30 lb test attached to an 8 ft Ugly stick. The fish gobbled a Big Game Mirro lure and really doubled the pole over. The pig commenced to ripping out the line until the boat started moving along real nicely. It luckily dragged me into deep water, about 180 ft. Otherwise it would have got into the rocks and broke off as often times happens.
Much thanks for the cool site,
Marko

kayak fishing ulua

NOTE: There's a good number of varied species of fish caught from kayaks in Hawaii these days, especially from the Big Island. After speaking with a few who kayak fishing there, I was told that near shore the depth drops off dramatically and pelagic and other game fish are not far offshore. Talk about a kayak fishing mecca.
