Default I know that it is called 'hooping'

but are the star type crab traps allowed?

I dont know, but I have used them befor and never got in trubble. You are better of getting a hoop net for keeper size crab and lobster!!!!

Thanks for the info. I have hoops. but the stars are easy to carry on a kayak. here in N. Calif, I often drop a couple when I'm on my way out to fish. they are so much easier to transport.

I have a couple of those too, local tackle used to sell them, with so much crap about the regular hoops. I never use em anymore.
