Default Installing Hatches

Does anybody out there have any experence installing hatches on a kayak? I've read a few articles on the subject but they were more for Boaters cutting into fiberglass. I think the process will be simple enough, cut a hole, place the hatch over the hole and screw down (well nut and bolt acually), apply enough Marine Goop to seal the hatch and viola. Anybody know anthing more?

Thumbs up Re: Installing Hatches

You pretty much have installing hatches down Use a saber saw or dremel or ?? to make a nice hole, deburr it a bit then use the gasket that it came with or marine Goop for a nice seal. I've used rivets at Malibu to install them, but then you need to make sure they expand all the way and are tight.

Perry, since you have access to the mounting hardware, you should try SS screws something like 3/16x .75. Using rivits may pull though the plastic. I use a dremel with a cutting wheel, than finish with a sanding drum. Always measure after every step. Seal with a good marine RTV
