Thumbs up MDR Halibut Derby

2007 Marina Del Rey Halibut Derby

April 21 & 22, 2007

*Special Kayak Division*
Mark your calendars for April 21 & 22, 2007, for the 33rd Annual Marina Del Rey Halibut Derby. This event just keeps getting better and better. Last year 835 anglers competed for over $65,000 in cash and prizes. Win spectacular prizes and raffle items including deluxe fishing vacations to Van Wormer's beautiful Hotel Punta Colorada, The Inn at Mazatlan, El Cid, Las Flores Resort, Las Rocas Resort & Spa, Sitka Point Lodge and the Vagabond as well as a shot at a brand new Toyota Tundra Truck from Marina Del Rey Toyota. The derby dates have even been moved forward by a month to take advantage of the normally expected better weather and better fishing later in the Spring.

There will be many easy ways to register: Mail-in registration forms will be available shortly and will be mailed to past participants; MDR Anglers will have a MDR Halibut Derby registration booth at the Fred Hall Show; the Halibut Fishing Seminar at Burton Chace Park on April 11; registration forms will be published in Western Outdoor News and Pacific Coast Sportfishing Magazine; and there will be a last minute registration desk open at Burton Chace Park from 3:00 to 8:00 PM everyday from April 16 – 20, the week preceding the derby. You can also contact the Derby co-chairs at their numbers listed below to answer any questions and to request a mail in registration form.

The annual Halibut Fishing Seminar, April 11, 2007, should be attended by any serious or novice halibut fishermen. Legendary halibut experts known to all halibut fanatics will lead the seminar. They will uncover many of their secrets about their killer techniques and discuss a variety of critical aspects of halibut fishing including, natural and artificial baits, drifting, trolling and bounce ball techniques, the right gear and terminal tackle along with when and where to fish specific areas to maximize success. Expert halibut anglers and beginners alike will all be able to pick up some tips to improve their skills and raise their chance of victory.

Recognizing that kayak angling is the fastest growing and one of the most exciting angling venues in fishing today, the 2007 MDR Halibut Derby will showcase a separate kayak division this year. There will be a separate jackpot for kayak anglers and trophies for the 3 biggest halibut landed by kayakers assuring plenty of bragging rights and a place on stage for the rapidly growing kayak community. Kayakers will also be able to join the team competition and regular jack pot and be eligible for all of the high valued regular prizes as well. The Kayak Challenge is on!!!!

The MDR Halibut Derby is the largest fishing tournament on the west coast, boasts the largest assembly of cash and non cash prizes and is a ton of fun. Two full days of fishing are followed by a huge awards dinner and prize ceremony. All proceeds go to fund MDRA's youth fishing program, the White Seabass Ocean Enhancement Program and other charitable causes. So private boaters, party boat anglers and kayakers, mark your 2007 calendars for April 21 & 22 for the derby, and plan to attend the halibut fishing seminar on April 11 as well.
