Thumbs up Re: Hoopin

Hmmm, not really. If I knew where some good places to hoop for crabs was and a few good crab recipes, I may give it shot though. Do you hoop for crabs?

When I was a kid I used to hoop for crabs off the Santa Monica Pier. Used to catch an occasional bug with a rod and reel, too. What's the question? Oh yeah

No Perry
Actually I don't yet hoop at all, yet. Just got 3 Promars with a 25% off coupon from Sports authority, actually this week is a better sale (25% off fishing accessories plus $10 off $50 purchase coupon). Was looking to possibly do some joint ops, crabbing & bug RECON

Growing up on the east coast (NJ) we went crabbin all the time for Blue claws as well as the elusive Maryland Softshell. Always had a great time selling em to the poor folks comin off the moo moos empty handed and drunk.

Need another box on poll for those of us who would like to try kayak crabbing. I would much prefer taking my hoops out in the daylight and learning how to set and retrieve without working in the dark.

Where would you go?

I wonder if it would be worth droppin' a hoop on a sand flat with a float on the way out, fish a little and check back on the hoop?

More likely drop along a break wall similar to where you would go for bugs. Need to get the rope lengths correct and the floats set up. Also, I have not checked regs in years - don't know season, limits nor size, nor gender.

Regs are easy:
ALL CRABS (EXCEPT DUNGENESS)
Season: there is none - ALL YEAR LONG
Limits: 35
Legal Length: 4 inches measured by the shortest distance through the body, from the edge of the shell to the edge of the shell at the widest part.

Good question
Definitely the break wall
Also would hit up the jetties out from Los Al and Huntington Harbor.

In a few weeks I plan to start aggressively working these areas. (after th 18th )
