I use the foam pads all the time on my 04 neon with no problem! If your worried about it coming off just tie the back and front down with rope as a safety

i have carrier and most of the time use it. didn't like transport this with my car.

Try the Roof Rakapak Inflatable with the lashing straps. You can find it easily online. It has a reasonable price and you can easily transport your sit-on-top kayak on any distance you like.
