Belize Fishing | Planning a kayak fishing trip to Belize
Although the best fishing in Belize happens during the middle of the summer when the winds lay down and the seas begin to resemble a flat pane of glass with the odd ripple occasionally reminding us that you can’t walk across it. With the main fishing kicking off around the end of May and rolling through September it’s not to say that the winter or “tourist” months are bad fishing. In fact, Belize is an excellent fishery year round. During the months of December through April anglers can expect to find Bonefish to be plentiful and in large abundance. The sizes are a bit small but like all Bonefish they have a tremendous fight and are a real joy on super light tackle such as a five-weight fly rod or an extra light-spinning rig. You can also find Permit off the shores of Ambergris Caye as well as other small surrounding cayes tot eh west most highly noted are Blackador Caye, Mosquito Caye, as well as Savanna Caye. Plan your Belize fishing trip to coincided with a the “new” moon phase of the lunar cycle and on a low tide you can find schools of good sized Tarpon ranging from forty to seventy pounds rolling around the flats between Savanna and Mosquito Caye crashing schools of baitfish. Depending on you’re preference of style of fishing you can arrange a traditional guided boat tour or you can take your adventure one step further and fish the flats of Belize on custom made “fishing kayaks” like Big D of Bite Me Fishing Adventures does Kayak Fishing Belize. He and his disturbed group of fly fishing junkies are noted for heading out to the Tarpon flats and catching these monster fish on kayaks and fly gear. Watching these fellas lock into an eighty pounder and the kayak as well as the fisherman in tow across the flats and out to sea is amusing and a real thrill as well. This style of Kayak fishing has been dubbed as the “San Pedro Sleigh Ride”. With such a constantly good producing fishery year round everyone can have a great fishing vacation in Belize regardless of the season you book your trip for. However, if you want HUGE migrating Tarpon, aggressive large Permit or even a spawning school of overly active Bonefish then plan your Belize fishing vacation during the summer months.
