Oceanside Report - Encounter of the Black Seabass kind
We did well and weighed in 12lbs,which was good enough for 11th place and a new Shimano Jig Stick. What was really wild today is an encounter we had with a giant black seabass that we estimate was 200-300lbs! As I was reeling in the calico, pictured below on the right, I saw a large "silver" flash at about 15 feet. Within a second I realized it was this monster seabass trying to eat my calico. The BSB came back for 2 more swipes as I was screaming for Lee to get the net. Just as Lee reached in to net the calico and gets the fish in the net, the BSB makes one more charge at the surface and tries to engulf the calico, 30" wide net and all. I have never seen this before nor have I ever seen a BSB this size (other than hanging on the wall taxidermy style). You can see the knocked off scales on the calico from where the BSB had him in his mouth for a moment. All-in-all a great day of fishing big plastics for some decent sized calicos! ...and all fish released to be eaten another day. Ed

Re: Oceanside Report - Encounter of the Black Seabass kind
ED,
Thanks for the report and story. I can imagine that BSB thinking he has an easy meal floundering right in front of him, and he's gonna take advantage of it while he can and chow down. That checkerboard looks like it was definitely an entree at a meal. Congrats on the finish, you sound like you are having a good year so far. Talk to you soon, Perry
