Flats & Horseshoe Report

The last couple of weekends we took "Charlie" for runs to Huntington Flats and Horseshoe Kelp respectively. Last week The Flats put out a couple of decent keepers for the bag but there should be better fishing in weeks to come. The fish were caught on sardines and fish trap lures. No complaints about the weather and water conditions.

Both trips saw the Department of Fish and Game at the launch with random inspections. (Daveys Launch - Long Beach)


Now we come to the late afternoon/early evening trip to "The Shoe". Once we left the safe haven of the harbor, the water and wind conditions were a mess. We had no business pressing on to find the reported big number of Bass and Barries caught on the twilight trips from the local landings. After a gut wrenching ride to the fishing grounds we arrived to a basically empty lot. What the hell were we thinking? The swells made it virtually impossible to drop a line in the water and fish safely. It didn't take long to make the decision to get out of Dodge and head back to the harbor. We did salvage the trip by fishing one of the islands in Long Beach. Lessoned learned in a BIG way!!!

Next time I can hire one of these guys or gals to paddle my yak for me.


Maybe I should have skipped the trip and joined these people across the way at Mothers Beach.

Nice report, the boat is really nice, its simple with a purpose. As far as getting one of the girls to paddle for ya.... Thanks for the report and tight lines.

I should have put in the report that it's Joe's boat.
Sorry about that Joe. The boat busted it's way through some tough conditions. It was the first time we found ourselves head to head with some nasty swells and "Charlie" was no worse for wear.
