How high above water should Kayak sit?

Received cheaper Fusion Beach kayak for Christmas. Just enough to get me started I figure. Went out today to the local lake just to sit in it and get a feel. When i sat in the kayak, the water line went right up to where the widest part of the yak is, Not sure if this is the one for me that I might be sitting too far down in the water. How much kayak is supposed to be submerged.
