Dana Point

2 Attachment(s)
Went out to Dana this morning. I launched at the ramp and got on the water at about 9:00 and headed out to the point. Had Dive gear on board instead of my fishing gear so, of course there were fish all over the fish finder out at the point. However, I made about an hour dive and came back with a bag full of scallops so it wasn't a loss. This is what they looked like. And of course this is how they ended up. I had a limit of these. Back at the ramp by noon.

Boy, that last picture is almost too much to take. Steak, shrimp and scallops...good for breakfast, too :D

I have never fished DP. I went down there Sunday afternoon to scout it out and see if I ran across any yakkers. I drove through by the ramp. Do you guys park and launch there?

I use the ramp when it is not crowded but it usually costs ten bucks to launch there. However it is a much shorter paddle out. Most guys park and launch at mothers beach down by the youth center. It is just down the road a ways from the launch ramp. A further paddle but free to launch.

Thanks for the intel.

I don't dive yet, but I've been thinking about getting into it. Do you dive the same places you fish? It seems like you could really increase your hook-up ratio.

Incredible,
Thanks for the report and mouth-watering photos. So, that's what real scallops look like? They look pretty yummy :thumbup

Tarpon Guy,
Like Incredible said, you can save a paddle and pay to use the launch ramp, or launch by the Youth Group Center next to Mothers Beach. Mothers beach is free parking, but you need to get there early on the weekends because of the AA meetings at the YGC and those who are staking out the BBQ's by the sand getting there early. He this helps,
Perry

When I was diving the scallops never made it back to the beach. They are so great straight out of the water. "you mean there is a catch limit now?"

Re: Dana Point

Robert and Perry it was great meeting up with you guys last weekend at BPS. I started saving cans so I can make enough to buy that hand made shot gun for $141,500.00 or maybe I can pay off my house instead.

Tarpon guy, Yes you can dive pretty much wherever you fish. Kelp beds are great and with a fish finder on your yak you can find all kinds of bottom structure that no one dives from shore and power boaters usually go out further so you can find some reefs that are mostly untouched. Flat sandy bottom is a good place to hunt for halibut. Let me know when you are ready to start diving.

Sea slug, Yea unless I red the regs wrong there is a bag limit of ten on scallops. That doesn't count the ones that do not make it to the surface. I am not allowed to go if I don't bring some home for the boss. However, she did cut the grass while I was gone.
