Not to scwooble over small potatos but 31 should be moved to 34, your spread sheet isn't set to read into the 10th or.... Human error, anyway great fun awsome day, good food, hard fishin!

Re: Oceanside Results

This is going to be a LONG post folks.

First of all I want to thank the organizers and the weigh boat captains and crew for a FANTASTIC tournament. I sincerely want to thank you all for your efforts as I believe many times this is all taken for granted; in short, I heart felt THANKS.

Congratulations to the top finishers and especially those that went a LONG ways to catch their limits: AWESOME.

Al and I worked a series of rock piles that were about 100 yards off the marked reefs. The bite was wide open for the first hour in the morning and I caught my limit in twenty minutes; problem was these fish were defective....tail too close to their head. Throughout the day we would work and area and then let it rest. Rarely were Al and I on the same spot at the same time. At the very end of the tournament Al found another separate rock pile that gave him his last 2.something lb. fish. It was HARD WORK as we had to go through many small fish to find a good one.

We used Berkley Gulp shads on 2 oz. lead heads and Al's trick hair jig combo that actually produced his biggest fish. Our Dobyns 736C and 735C rods were simply the best rods I've ever used and I've fished with Powell in fresh water; they are EXTREMELY sensitive and light. Later in the day the bite was an imperceptible "tic" in 80 ft of water. Without these rods I doubt we would have caught some of the fish we caught.

We wish to thank Southwind Kayak for their sponsorship and confidence in our abilities. They have been instrumental in getting us pieces of equipment we used in this tournament.

A short note on kayaks. Al and I compared the relative speed of his Outback with my Revolution. In the morning "sprint" to our first rock pile, my Revo outdistanced him by 20 minutes. That's 20 minutes in approximately 3.2 miles as the crow flies. Same cadence on the pedalling and the Revo gradually pulled away from the Outback. He was also much more tired. Conclusion for the kayak angler: if you are headed into competitive angling out on the ocean, get a Hobie Revolution.

Sorry for the long-winded post but I'm still pumped from yesterday. These tournaments are just fantastic and the people involved could not be nicer.

Take care all,

Angel Figueras
PS: I took a bunch of images. As soon as I get them reduced in size I'll post them.

Angel, How do the Powel and Dobyns rods compare with the Gloomis?

Pretty fun tournament requiring a unique style of fishing. Wish I had a lot more exprience out there.

Re: Oceanside Results

Will,

Gary Dobyns is a fine individual and has a professional bass fishing record that spans probably more than twenty five years with over 40 boats won in tournament competition. The man can fish. He has put this experience into the design and perfection of his fishing rod arsenal. I have G-Loomis rods for freshwater that I acquired through contacts when fishing pro bass tournaments in the early to mid 90's. I still have them for fresh water and they are great rods. I also have one Powell rod but I find it a bit on the heavy side; still a finely engineered and built rod.

We were blessed when we stumbled unto the Dobyns program as they are a first class company in every way. The product is a well-kept secret in bass circles and the demand has outstripped supply. The Dobyns rods disappear off the shelves as quickly as they come in and they are usually back ordered. Gary is going through great lengths to rectify this.

I have now had a chance to fish the new Dobyns rods and I can tell you that they are incredibly sensitive and I believe lighter than their counterpart G-Loomis rods. They have their own proprietary carbon fiber weave/lay up protocol that makes them incredibly sensitive, light and strong. My belief is that when fish are aggresive, a broom stick can work effectively; you don't need sensitivity when they rip the rod out of your hands. But when the fishing gets tough as it did this weekend, sensitivity is the key to getting bit. Do I believe that sensitivity helped both Al and me, you bet. How much? I can't quantitatively say. All I know is that the product is first class, it is largely designed with the input of one of the finest professional bass guys in the country and it is his company, not a major corporate product. As such it warrants the respect that I give it. Dobyns is a first-class show.
Gary is listening to our feedback and making fine tuning adjustments to the product line for salt water. There are a few surprises coming down the road. We'll have to wait and see.

I'll be glad to let you use one of mine if you ever see me on the water.

Tight lines Will,

Angel Figueras

Re: Oceanside Results

Angel, I will take you up on that offer. I have heard of Dobyns but never seen one first hand. Since I switched to the Gloomis Mag Bass rods I havent seen anything close to them for strength, lightness, sensitivity and general balanced feel. Plus they have a wide range of application from spotties to sand bass to calicos and the Expiditor service lets you trade in your old rod at any time for a new one for $50

But if you say the Dobyns is as good or better I want to check it out

Thanks for the info
