Scupper cart wheels
 

I used the Hobie standard plastic wheels for a while then got the upgraded pneumatic wheels - neither work well at the Coast Guard Station.

Both types sink into the soft sand to the point of making the kayak very hard to pull across the beach. On pavement they are a breeze.

The wide (5" to 8") plastic wheels would work well but they would be a royal pain to carry on the kayak on the water.

I am just wondering - would I do better leaving the wheels off while I pull across the sand? I may try that if I don't hear better suggestions. Hate to score up the bottom of the kayak.

I only use my wheels to roll across hard surface and I just drag my boat over soft sand. It moves easily over the sand even when it is loaded.

Which types of plastic wheels are you using? If you have a photo of them, maybe you could attach them to a post so we can see which ones you have.

I'm getting some photos together on carts, and I shot these at the Coast Guard Beach and my driveway.

This is a photo after I used my Roleez cart and pulled the Big Game across the sand. As you can see, it went across pretty well. Also, I'm not saying the Roleez carts are the best value or quality out there. They cost about $170 or more which I think is way too much, and I have had to replace both wheel bearings on mine which were broken when taken out of the box. They're also no longer made in the USA, but China like so many other products these days.

In the photo below, you see how the width of the tires compare to one of the COD kayak carts out there. I like the COD style cart because it is alot easier to carry and for smooth surfaces they ain't bad.

Maybe the one coming out from Hobie would work out better for you? I haven't had the chance to see one yet. You could always pull your kayak across the sand, but I think if you had the right cart maybe you wouldn't have to and it may be easier on you and your equipment. Just a thought,

The Hobie wheels I have are similar to the bottom rubber wheels in the bottom of the photo above. I have to stop and rest twice on the way across the Coast Guard beach - going straight to the rest room corner. Once I reach the cement they go very well.

The plastic wheels were about 3" wide and worked a bit better on the loose sand.

The big wheels would require carrying all the way back to the vehicle for storage as much delay as resting going across the sand.

I found the new plastic wheels today at Southwind Kayaks. They are expensive but about half again as wide as the original plastic wheels. I will find out tomorrow if they work well at Coast Guard.

Major difference with the gray plastic wheels. I was able to pull straight across the CG beach without stopping.

This am - Barracuda, Spotties, Mackerel, nice water, but slow action.

I get a workout slugging through that sand without any wheels.:o I have order these online or attempt to make these.

Making something like that may not be too awefully hard. I put up a link in the "Penny Pinchers and Sales" forum with the URL to where they carry the roleez wheels that are cosmetic blems for thirty-something apiece through the end of September. What do the prebuilt carts go for?
