Re: Rods and Reels
All kinds of answers to that question depending on budget.
The short answer is a rod 6-7 feet in with 20-40 pound rating and a reel that will hold 20-40# line and give you 10# of drag A $120 rig would be a Penn Jigmaster 500 and an Ugly Stick Shimano TLD 20/40 would be a good $100ish reel, Sealine would be another. Squidco in SD has great prices and some really cheap rods that will get it done. |
Re: Rods and Reels
Thanks Iceman. I have a couple of spincast surf poles and a Shimano Torium on a 7 ft stick. The Torium is not that cast friendly. I was thinking of purchasing a Calcutta reel. Does anyone have input of these?

Re: Rods and Reels
Calcuttas are great reels.
The Torium is a Very cast friendly reel as long as you are using the right size reel with the right line weight for lure you are casting. |
Re: Rods and Reels
Love my calcuttas. Excellent light bait reel and for fishing the plastics. A Penn jigmaster 500 is a pretty bulletproof reel for the kayak. Great medium to heavy bait reel.

Re: Rods and Reels
Used an older Calcuta 400 as my main yellow and tuna reel for years never a problem and great casting..................

Re: Rods and Reels
If you want to go another route I really love the avet reels. They cast great and if you want to spend the money you can get a 2 speed version which is a nice luxury to have.
