I'm 6'1" 250lbs. I paddle a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140. It's a great all around boat. I fish La Jolla and the Bays with it and it works fine. I recommend a rudder
for most kayaks. It makes paddling that much more fun, because you don't have to make a bunch of paddle corrections because of wind or current. I would definitely take a look at the Hobie Outback also.
As for VHF radios. In my opinion I would never get a hand held VHF that wasn't
at least JA7 submersible rated. Check out the Standard Horizon models.
