Dana Point (BIG FISH)
The day started as normal with Mike and I launching at 4:30a.m from Baby beach. We were heading out to fish the pipe for some sand bass and calico's. The bass were chewing like I haven't seen in a long time, Mike caught a nice calico and sand bass on his first two drops, while I was busy with my own calico's using swim baits. The bass fishing remained good until about 8:00, when all hell broke lose, my rod that I had at the bottom with a new penny 6" grub with 15# P-line on it almost got yanked out of the holder, I grab it to set the hook and realized.....Damn!!!!! this is a huge fish. I called over to Mike (who really helped out by keeping me calm, and just in case!!) I was being pulled out to deeper water at first, then South, North and finally back in. It took me 45min. to land the fish. (I was beat, but really stoked)
It will be a day Mike and I will not soon forget, I look at it as, I got super lucky, but I'll take that. Here are some pictures of today. Early morning bass bite. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...int5-16003.jpg This fish was weighed at the fuel dock scale, and it tipped in at 65.5lbs. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...int5-16006.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...int5-16004.jpg http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...int5-16007.jpg I got some measurements of the fish too. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...int5-16010.jpghttp://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...int5-16011.jpg This was the biggest WSB I've ever caught, and the best part was using my bass rod to do it. _________________ Derwin http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z...ORO2copy-1.jpg |
Re: Dana Point (BIG FISH)
Congrats Derwin, Great fish.
with 15# pound line, I bet the kayak was crucial in fighting that fish. A boater would not have been drug around and probably been spooled or broke off. Great Job. I have some room in my freezer for fillets, you know just in case. |
Re: Dana Point (BIG FISH)
HobieTom,
You are so right about the Kayak, I was able to chase the fish down and kept it right under the yak for most of the fight, most of all, with the Hobie kayak I was able to peddle with the fish while holding the rod and fighting it all at the same time.:hurray: |

Re: Dana Point (BIG FISH)
Paintnfish,
I did not go back up to Dana the next day, I was truly worked by that fish. I thought landing it was tough, but towing it back in from the Barber poles was the what put me out for any fishing the next day:redface: Derwin |

I fish Dana quite a bit...What is considered the "pipe"? I know of the barber poles straight out from the point... Thanks and GREAT fish! -Steve |
Re: Dana Point (BIG FISH)
Steve,
There is a old pipe that runs all the way out to the barber poles, the poles mark the end were it T's off. When you leave the harbor, head for the red buoy that is south of the entrance, then line your self up with the poles and paddle straight out, the pipe starts to appear on your fish finder at about 45' of water. It's a little hard to find but once you do it's easy to spot. We have found that the sand bass hang on the sandy area next to the pipe, and the calico bass hang right on it. (Just a warning that you will snag the pipe if you fish directly on top of it and lose a lure or two) Also the pipe disapears now and then on the way out but just keep that heading and it will re-appear. We might be fishing back up there on the 20-21st of June, hope to see you out there then. Good luck!!! Derwin |
